Again I return to the carpet by the stairs,

staring down into time to reach weavers

threading weft and woof

with skeins of earth-tone wool

in villages that history stained with blood,

until "rich in history" became a place

that people had to flee

leaving worn rugs, shadows of their lives.

on which I tread.
